Kuala Lumpur: Indian Men’s Hockey captain Manpreet Singh Pawar finally married his Malaysian girlfriend Illi Najwa Saddique on Wednesday. The couple’s family members and their close relatives attended the wedding ceremony that took place in Manpreet Singh’s native village in Mithapur near Jalandhar city of India’s Punjab state.
Manpreer and Illi’s love story had begun during Sultan of Johor Cup in 2012 when Manpreet Singh was leading the Indian Junior Hockey team.
Speaking to the Deccan Chronicle, Illi Najwa revealed Manpreet was the one who first approached and told that he liked her. Illi said ,”It was love at first sight” and she could not stop herself to say ‘yes’ when the Indian sportsman proposed to her.
Illi Najwa, who was born in Pakistan and brought up in Malaysia, has a very deep connection with Hockey as her mother used to play the same game for the Malaysian army.
Illi Najwa, who is the niece of Malaysia’s current National Unity Minister Halimah Mohamed Sadique, said that the decision of their marriage is based on mutual understanding and respect.
The couple, who got engaged in 2014, wanted to marry early this year but had to postpone due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Manpreet Singh is leading Indian Hockey team since 2017, while his wife Illi Najwa is working in a private university in Malaysia.
