Anthony Soter Fernandez, Malaysia’s first Roman Catholic cardinal, died today due to tongue cancer. He was 88. He breathed his last at around 12.35pm today at a care home in Cheras, where he had been under palliative care.
Fernandez was diagnosed with tongue cancer in November last year. He had been under treatment and was even given immunotherapy and radiotherapy.
The funeral schedule has not been announced yet, however, it is expected to be a quite affair as not more than 20 people are allowed to attend the service and burial.
Fernandez will be remembered as an extraordinary leader of the Catholic church. He was known as just, courageous and sincere leader.
