Anwar Urges Companies and Universities to Prioritize Malay in Government Correspondence

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized the importance of using the Malay language in correspondence with government agencies, urging companies and universities to uphold the constitutional commitment to Malay as the national language. Speaking during a national language and reading carnival, Anwar acknowledged the significance of English as an international trade language but expressed concern about an overemphasis on English in some government offices, private universities, and other sectors.

Article 152 of the Federal Constitution designates Malay as the national language, and the National Language Act of 1967 reinforces its status. Anwar issued a directive for government agencies to return correspondence not written in Malay, underscoring the government’s commitment to the national language.

He clarified that his emphasis on the use of Malay was not a disregard for other languages but rather a call to strengthen the national language as an integral part of nation-building. Anwar also called upon higher education institutions and schools to promote the use of Malay, in line with the constitutional mandate and the nation’s cultural identity.
