In a thrilling quarter-final clash of the Malaysia Cup, defending champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) showcased their dominance with a commanding 3-0 victory over three-time champions Negeri Sembilan FC (NSFC). Brazilian import Bergson Da Silva emerged as the hero of the night, bagging a spectacular brace to secure JDT’s lead.
The game kicked off with the Southern Tigers displaying aggressive intent right from the start. Their attacking prowess was evident when Bergson had a close call in the 14th minute, forcing NSFC goalkeeper Muhammad Firdaus Irman Mohd Fadhil to make a crucial save.
However, JDT didn’t have to wait long to break the deadlock. In the 20th minute, Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi unleashed a thunderous long-range shot that found the back of the net, giving JDT a well-deserved lead.
NSFC’s troubles deepened in the 31st minute when their defender, Nasrullah Haniff Johan, fouled Bergson in the penalty area. Bergson calmly stepped up and converted the penalty, extending JDT’s lead to 2-0.
Despite the guidance of coach K. Devan, NSFC struggled to mount a comeback. JDT’s solid defense and relentless attack thwarted any chances of a turnaround.
Bergson sealed the deal for JDT in injury time (90+1) with a sublime freekick that left the NSFC goalkeeper with no chance. This goal not only secured JDT’s victory but also provided them with a comfortable three-goal cushion heading into the return leg.
The return leg of this thrilling quarter-final clash will take place at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, where NSFC will have an uphill battle to overturn the deficit and advance in the Malaysia Cup.
