Penang Sees 100% Covid Rise On CNY, Residents Advised To Stay Vigilant

Penang health committee chairman Dr Norlela Ariffin has urged people to maintain their vigilance as the Covid-19 threat remains. This comes after the state witnessed a 100% increase in daily Covid cases on the first day of the Chinese New Year. Yesterday, Penang reported 426 cases, which is a new high considering the average 200 to 250 cases. She said that although the state has the top vaccination rate in the country, the threat remains real.

Dr Norlela Ariffin said that out of the 426 cases, 11 were foreigners. According to data, the Balik Pulau district recorded the most number of cases, followed by the sub-districts of Kepala Batas, Bukit Mertajam, Nibong Tebal and the George Town District.

Doctors are advising people to frequently take Covid-19 self test, especially those who are exposed to public areas.

Meanwhile, Malaysia reported 5,566 cases, taking the total number of cases in the country to 2,876,324.
