Govt Must Start Alcohol Cessation Programme Instead Of Giving Religious Colour: Dr Lee

Kuala Lumpur: The former deputy health minister Dr Lee Boon Chye has asked the government to start an alcohol cessation programme for excessive drinkers, instead of making religious comments. Dr Lee Boon Chye pointed out that drunk driving can be handled with education and harsher penalty, however, the health ministry needs to start alcohol cessation programmes to help and treat the addicted drinkers.

He stated that only private organisations and NGOs are operating these programmes, where the health ministry should be the one doing it.

Meanwhile, he said that the government did put a ban on liquor sales, but that it took a religious colour. The Malaysian Consumer Movement (MCM) said that it is a sensitive and social problem, which should be taken seriously instead of making it all about religion.

Earlier, City Hall (DBKL) had issued new guidelines regarding the sale of liquor in the country. According to which, Chinese medicine shops, Sundry and grocery shops in capital Kuala Lumpur will not be allowed to sell liquor from 1 October.
