Kuala Lumpur: Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad today said that a two-party system is best suited for Malaysia as it gives the nation the “political stability”. “The best system is a two-party democracy where one or the other will win,” Dr M said at a KL Summit today.
Dr M further said that “no party will have majority to govern” if there are too many parties.
In such a system, he said, that the smaller parties tend to demand more, as they know that the government will fall without them.
Mahathir, a two-time prime minister, gave the example of Western democracies England (Conservative and Labour) and the United States (Republican and Democratic) as examples.
The former Prime Minister recently ran a coalition government that fell after a majority of MPs supporting him switched their loyalties PM Muhyiddin Yassin.
