Google, Facebook, Twitter Ask Muhyiddin Yassin To Reinstate Foreign Ship Cable Waiver: Report

Kuala Lumpur: Tech giants Google, Facebook and Twitter have urged Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to reinstate an exception for the foreign ships to conduct their submarine cables repair work in the nation. This comes after Transport Ministry Wee Ka Siong announced all non-Malaysian vessels will have to get a domestic shipping license approved.

Earlier, in 2019 the government announced immunity to use non-Malaysian ships. However, the transport minister said the rule was lifted considering the outflow of foreign money through carriage payments.

He further introduced that all the foreign ships will have to apply for a domestic shipping license, to carry out the work which cannot be completed by the local ships by using the electronic system, which would take a longer repair time.

The tech giant’s in a letter to the government stated that they do not provide stability or policy environment projects for foreign investments.
