KUALA LUMPUR – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, former Prime Minister of Malaysia, had his statement recorded to aid an investigation regarding offensive comments directed at the royal institution, as reported by a news portal on June 6. Additionally, statements were obtained from Datuk Seri Khairuddin Abu Hassan, the former chairman of Federal Territory Pejuang, and former Pejuang deputy president Datuk Marzuki Yahya.
Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain, Director of Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department, emphasized that the case is in the investigative phase. He cautioned the public against speculating or sharing incorrect information that could hinder the investigation process. The case is being handled by the Classified Crime Investigation Unit (USJT), Division D5, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department, under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Furthermore, Director Shuhaily confirmed a separate investigation against the Facebook account owner, Iman Mustaqim, who had posted offensive content against the Sultan of Selangor. The content was deemed to have the potential to insult or incite disloyalty towards Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. The investigation, again, falls under the purview of the Classified Crime Investigation Unit (USJT), Division D5, Bukit Aman, under the same legal sections.
It’s important to note that both cases are ongoing investigations, and the public is urged to refrain from spreading rumors or false information. – Bernama, August 30, 2023.
