Malaysia’s top Islamic body–Department of Islamic Development (Jakim)—has declared today that insulting rulers equals the insulting of Allah. “The Sultan (Ruler) is the representative of Allah on earth. Whoever glorifies him then Allah glorifies him and whoever insults him then Allah will insult him,” wrote Jakim on Facebook. However, many people did not like the remark as it led to mixed reactions on social media.

“Jakim being rebuked on here by muslims themselves is what happens when those in power use religion to deny agency to the people who have had enough”, a user reacted on Jakim’s post.

Another user wrote on Twitter, “My expectations for JAKIM are low, but goodness, this is shocking. Defaming the Prophet by attributing to him an unverified saying that goes against the fundamental principle of equality in Islam.”

“Many have reprimanded the ugly hadith. The problem is the admin who guards the account maybe was told to post that thing. And … Who ordered it? Jeng jeng jeng. To raise the sultan as the shadow of God is said. Man cannot be compared to God!,” said one of the users.
