Johor Baru City Council Called For Transit Centre For Homeless

Kuala Lumpur: The Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) has been asked to set up transit centres similar to Kuala Lumpur and Penang, considering the issue of homelessness in the city.

State Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Zaiton Ismail stated that the State Social Welfare Department (JKM) and Darul Ta’zim Family Development Foundation (YPKDT) cannot afford to set transit centres as they have no special amount allocated for this purpose.

However, she urged MBJB to consider this issue, as they have the source to build the centres. Adding that in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, the transit centres are under the supervision of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

Zaiton stated that the state welfare department had been monitoring the lives of homeless, while many have been rounded up during the CMCO. Out of which some were sent home, while others with drug or a mental problem were handed over to respective agencies.

She further urged non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to team-up with Malaysian Red Crescent Society and the National Welfare Foundation (YKN) to provide food supplies for these homeless people.
