Kedah Menteri Besar Asserts PAS as Key Political ‘Kingmaker’ Amidst Debate Over Alliance Revival: Report

Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor stated that any successful political cooperation in Malaysia requires the involvement of PAS, which he described as a “kingmaker” due to its influential role in the country’s political landscape. This comes in response to Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s dismissal of the idea of reviving the Muafakat Nasional (MN) alliance with PAS, suggesting hidden agendas behind such a move.

Muhammad Sanusi emphasized that without PAS’s serious engagement, political collaborations would falter. He went on to criticize Ahmad Zahid’s leadership within Umno, highlighting the party’s recent setback in the Kedah state polls as evidence of dissatisfaction with his leadership.

Addressing accusations that PAS had hidden motives for wanting to revive MN, Muhammad Sanusi shifted blame to Ahmad Zahid, alleging that he manipulated the original goal of MN—which was to unite Muslims—for his own purposes.

Ahmad Zahid, in response, expressed Umno’s reluctance to partner with leaders perceived as “scheming.” PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, on the other hand, asserted that PAS was prepared to collaborate with Umno again through MN, but not with leaders willing to align with DAP.

In summary, the news highlights a clash of perspectives between Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi, who views PAS as essential for political partnerships, and Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who questions the motives behind reviving the MN alliance. The situation is complicated by the differing stances of PAS and Umno leaders on the potential revival of MN and their willingness to work together.
