Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today that he proposed setting up of Mageran – National Operations Council (NOC) — to look into people’s issue, as done in 1969 amid the emergency after riots. In 1969, the then Agong had imposed an emergency after riots between the Indigenous Malays and Chinese-Malays. Later, a NOC or Majlis Gerakan Negara (Mageran) was formed to look into people’s issue.

Dr M told the media that he wanted the government to propose the same to the king, however, he “doesn’t think they will propose”. Dr M said that the Rakyat seems to be very unhappy with the current dispensation.
Mahathir also suggested to the king that holding elections in the current scenario would be dangerous for the nation, adding that polls should be held on after the country achieves 80% herd immunity.
Today’s meeting with the Agong was Mahathir’s first audience since he was appointed interim prime minister last February, after the collapse of PH Government led by him.
