KUALA LUMPUR – In a significant step toward promoting transparency and trustworthiness in financial management, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who also serves as Finance Minister, has revealed plans to initiate discussions for the return of assets belonging to Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH). These assets were transferred to a special purpose vehicle (SPV) owned by the Finance Ministry (MOF) in 2018. The decision follows preliminary reports highlighting the improved management of TH and growing confidence among depositors, all attributed to the institution’s efficient leadership.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim articulated, “Having assessed the developments and consulted with the Minister of Religious Affairs and TH board chairman Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar, I have consistently maintained that once TH achieves efficient management, MOF will engage in discussions regarding the return of all assets held by the SPV.” He stressed the significance of this move, not only to ensure proper asset management but also to dispel unfounded allegations against the former finance minister, Lim Guan Eng, and the previous government. Anwar clarified, “This action will also debunk the irresponsible claims that the assets were transferred to a non-Islamic group during that time. No, I have reviewed the records, and they are still held by MOF, under my trust.”
This announcement was made during the grand celebration of TH’s 60th anniversary at Menara TH and was attended by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr. Mohd Na’im Mokhtar. This event signifies the government’s dedication to addressing depositor concerns and ensuring the responsible management of TH’s assets.

The decision to return TH’s assets to their rightful ownership represents a renewed commitment to accountability, trustworthiness, and responsible financial management. It not only acknowledges the success of TH’s improved management but also seeks to restore confidence among depositors who have entrusted their savings to the institution. This move aligns with the government’s broader agenda of fostering transparency and accountability in financial matters, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the interests of its citizens.
