In response to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) recent seizure of the 60-storey Menara Ilham, owned by the family of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is calling for prudence and confidence in the ongoing investigation. Anwar emphasized the need for Malaysians to avoid speculation and allow MACC to conduct its duties independently and impartially. Speaking after Friday prayers at the Masjid Jamek Kota Damansara mosque on December 22, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of refraining from premature judgments and urged citizens to let the legal process unfold without interference.
Anwar’s Call for Caution and Patience
Anwar cautioned against making unfounded interpretations suggesting conspiracies whenever high-profile individuals come under scrutiny. He asserted that the Malaysian system must showcase its commitment to taking decisive actions against corruption, irrespective of the individuals involved. Anwar highlighted the significance of allowing the investigative process to proceed smoothly, with trust placed in the judicial system to make informed decisions based on facts.

Emphasizing MACC’s duty to fearlessly investigate corruption, even if it implicates influential figures, Anwar called for a cessation of assumptions and premature conclusions. He reminded the public that the government is not representing a broken system and encouraged the system to set an example by taking bold actions against corruption.

Anwar underscored the need to give MACC the space to carry out its duties without fear or favor. He warned against potential criticisms that could arise if selective enforcement leads to the punishment of minor offenders while sparing those with significant influence. Anwar stressed the importance of a transparent investigation into the accumulation of extraordinary wealth by a particular individual to maintain public trust and prevent leaders from being perceived as protectors of corruption.

According to a notice dated December 18, the MACC seized Menara Ilham after discovering an offense under the MACC Act 2009. The tower, previously serving as the meeting point for the Council of Eminent Persons established by the Pakatan Harapan government in 2018, has become a focal point in the ongoing anti-corruption investigation.
