Muhyiddin Yassin will remain as the caretaker Prime Minister of Malaysia until a new head of the country is appointed, Istana Negara said today. The announcement from the palace came after Muhyiddin Yassin met the Agong today and tendered his resignation as the Prime Minister. Muhyiddin Yassin was appointed as the 14th PM of the country last year in February Dr Mahathir Mohamad stepped down from his post.
According to the statement released by the Palace, “Articles 40(2)(a) and 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution which states that the King must choose an MP who, in his judgment, commands the majority support in the Dewan Rakyat as the new prime minister”.
Earlier today, the entire cabinet, along with the PM Muhyiddin Yassin himself stepped down as the political crisis reached its peak.
