No Funding For Independent Chinese Schools, Colleges: Aziz

Kuala Lumpur: Finance Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz announced that the government would not fund the Chinese independent school and colleges in 2021.

He said this in reply to former deputy education minister and Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching, who wanted to know if the government is allocating some amount for Chinese independent secondary schools, and three non-profit private colleges that cater to Chinese students.

Earlier, in 2019, the government allocated RM12 million to develop independent Chinese schools.

However, in his written reply, he also announced that the education ministry will allocation fund later after considering the type of school, the number of students and the school’s individual needs.

The budget 2021 consist of RM50.4 billion allocation to the education ministry, while the higher education ministry will receive RM14.4 billion out of which RM800 million will be used to upgrade the schools.
