The 2024 Malaysian Games (SUKMA) set to take place in Sarawak next year have encountered controversy, as the Terengganu state government has officially declared that women gymnasts will not be participating in the event. This decision has been attributed to concerns over the tight sportswear traditionally worn by gymnasts, which is perceived as revealing the athletes’ figures and thus not in alignment with Sharia laws.

Hishammuddin Abdul Karim, the Executive Councilor for Youth, Sports, and NGO Development in Terengganu, made this announcement, emphasizing that the decision is not driven by opposition to the games but rather a commitment to upholding the principles of Sharia law. He urged all parties involved to respect their stance, emphasizing that they do not wish to put Terengganu’s athletes in a difficult situation.
The Terengganu state government has pointed out that accommodating sportswear guidelines in line with Sharia law while adhering to international sports regulations is a challenging task. This necessitates an educational component to raise awareness among athletes and stakeholders, which will require time to explore and adapt to. Consequently, the exclusion of women gymnasts from the 2024 SUKMA Games is seen as a temporary measure until a suitable solution can be found that balances both cultural and international sporting requirements.
This decision, though driven by religious and cultural considerations, has sparked discussions about inclusivity and the challenges faced by athletes in complying with various regulations. It highlights the ongoing dialogue needed to ensure the participation of all athletes in sports events while respecting diverse beliefs and traditions.
