Kuala Lumpur: The government and opposition clashed in the parliament on Tuesday after federal MPs accused the miscalculation during the bloc voting the Budget 2021. The uproar erupted soon after deputy speaker Rashid Hasnon mistakenly counted one of BN MPs, who was absent during the voting, in favour of the finance ministry’s budget at the committee stage.
Giving his explanation to federal lawmakers in Dewan Rakyat, the deputy speaker said he was wrongly informed by Shabudin Yahaya that BN’s Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz was included in the list to support Budget 2021.
However, Shabudin Yahaya, who is the deputy PM in the Muhyiddin Yassin government, apologised to the Speaker, saying that he mistakenly counted one of BN’s absent lawmakers in Parliament. He clarified that his intention was not to mislead the parliament.
The heated argument erupted in the house after many opposition leaders, including Noor Amin, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar) and RSN Rayer demanded to recount the bloc voting and urged parliament to take appropriate action to avoid such mistakes in future.
During the bloc voting, the finance ministry received 106 votes in its favour, while 95 voted against the move.
