A 35-year-old woman, born to Cambodian parents in Pahang, has filed an appeal in court demanding Malaysia citizenship. Azimah Hamzah claimed in the court that she is “stateless” as she is neither recognised as a citizen in Malaysia, nor Cambodia. She argued that her parents have been given citizenship and all her siblings are also recognised as Malaysians.

Azimah’s parents became naturalised Malaysian citizens in November 2008. The siblings – born to her parents – have also been granted citizenship under a special law. However, her bid for the same was rejected in the year 1998.
In 2008, her siblings were registered as Federal Constitution’s Article 15A that allows the government to register persons aged below 21 as citizens in special circumstances. Azimah had already crossed 21-year age bracket when this happened.
