Sinclair left school at 17 and worked as a technical journalist to raise funds. He founded Sinclair Radionics in 1961, where he launched the first slim-line electronic pocket calculator in 1972. Later, he moved into the production of home computers and produced the Sinclair ZX models.Â
His daughter Belinda Sinclair revealed until last week he was working on inventions because that was what he loved doing. She shared that her father was inventive and imaginative, and for him, “inventions were exciting and an adventure, it was his passion.”
However, not all his inventions were successful. He produced a flatscreen portable mini television, but LCD television was in its advanced development and the Sinclair FTV1 was a commercial flop, with only 15,000 units being produced.Â
Movie director Edgar Wright paid tribute to him on Twitter. He wrote, “He made 21st Century dreams feel possible. Will bash away on the rubber keys of a Spectrum in your honour. RIP.”
