At least 41 prisoners were killed and more than 80 were injured after a fire raged through an overcrowded jail in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta. The incident took place in the wee hours of Wednesday when most of the inmates were sleeping. Two foreign victims from South Africa and Portugal also died in the incident. It is expected that an electrical short-circuit could be a reason behind the fire in jail.

According to reports, there were more than 120 prisoners in the cell which had only 40 people of capacity.
The incident is being probed but authorities are believed that a short circuit could be caused of the blaze.
Jakarta police said that more than 70 inmates have sustained minor injuries while eight prisoners are serious.
Most of the prisoners were linked to drug-related offences in the cell.
The Indonesian government has said that they have informed the embassies of the respective countries of those who died or injured in the incident.
