Government Summons French Envoy Over Emannuel Macron’s ‘Hate Speech’ Against Islam

KUALA LUMPUR: Foreign Ministry has requested the presence of France’s charges d’affaires in Kuala Lumpur on October 28 to express its views over alleged hate speech and defamation of Islam.

The France’s charges d’affaires, Gilles Barrier was summoned to deliberate upon the recent derogatory remarks by French authorities including the President Emmanuel Macron himself, supporting the exhibition of caricatures and cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad in a French school classroom, following the recent case of the beheading of a French professor.

During the course of the meeting with Gilles Barrier, the officials firmly reprobated the recent remarks and mentioned “any inflammatory rhetoric and provocative acts that seek to defame the religion of Islam”.

Later, Foreign Minister Hishammuddin Hussein of Malaysia said that the country has always been committed to upholding freedom of speech and expression and the peaceful co-existence of all religions. He also said “as long as these rights are exercised with respect and responsibility in order to not infringe on or violate the rights of others”, .
