Indonesia: Mastermind Of Bali Bombings To Be Released From Jail Tomorrow

Kuala Lumpur: Indonesia is all set to release a radical cleric who was involved in the 2002 Bali terror attack. The 82-year-old Abu Bakar Bashir was the mastermind behind the Bali Bombings, where more than 200 people were killed.

Indonesian authorities have revealed that Bashir will be out of prison on 8 January as he has completed his jail sentence.

Bashir, who has been jailed since 2011, repeatedly denied his involvement in the terror attack.

According to reports, Bashir, who affiliated with radical Islamic organisation Al-Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiah (JI), had trained militants in the Aceh province on Sumatra Island.

Abu Bakar Bashir is the co-founder of JI, which is Southeast Asia’s largest militant Islamic group. The motive behind the JI is to establish an Islamic caliphate in the region.

Last month in December, Zulkarnaen, a commander of the Bali bombings, was arrested by Indonesian Police. It is believed that he was the man who made bombs and gave instructions to militants to blow up capital Bali.

Meanwhile, Australian Foreign Ministry has expressed indignation over the report of releasing Bashir, saying that move will deeply disturb the family members of victims who lost their loved ones in the attack.

More than 200 people were killed after in bombings that took place at Kuta beach– one of busiest tourist places in Bali. Of which, 88 were Australians, 38 were Indonesians, 23 were Britons.
