Taliban Want To Address UN General Assembly

The Taliban have expressed its willingness to address the United National General Assembly (UNGA). The armed group, that seized power last month from Ashraf Ghani, requested U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to allow the group to address the world leaders at the 76th UNGA meeting. The Taliban also appointed Suhail Shaheen, who was the spokesman of the Taliban In Qatar, as Afghanistan’s new UN Ambassador.

According to reports, The Taliban has sent a letterhead to the UN Secretary-General that has been sent to the nine members of the credential committee to consider the matter.

By addressing the UN, the Taliban wants its international reorganisation as several countries have already recognised the new government of Afghanistan.

According to the Taliban, the matter is being considered by the UN and it is expecting that the group may address the UN assembly on the last day of the meeting on September 27.

Meanwhile, Qatar, that has played a significant role in the Taliban-US peace talks, has urged world leaders during the UN meeting in New York to coordinate with the Taliban.

Meanwhile, the SAARC (South Asian Association and Regional Cooperation) rejected Pakistan’s demand to include the Taliban in the meeting as no party has agreed to recognise the Taliban as the new government of Afghanistan. According to reports, India has strongly opposed Pakistan’s move to include the Taliban in the group. The SAARC countries are— Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan.
