KUALA LUMPUR – The absence of PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang during the tabling of Budget 2024 last Friday has sparked inquiries from political observers. However, Hadi’s political secretary, Abdul Malik Abdul Razak, has stated that the Marang MP had informed the office of the Dewan Rakyat speaker well in advance of the sitting. This notification was acknowledged by Tan Sri Johari Abdul’s office.

Abdul Malik declined to disclose the specific reasons for Hadi’s absence and suggested that inquiries regarding this matter should be directed to the speaker’s office since they had received the notice of absence.

The controversy surrounding Hadi’s absence was fueled by a widely shared photograph of his empty seat during the budget tabling session. Some individuals criticized the PAS leader for his absence, as he was seen on the same day participating in a solidarity gathering with Palestine at the Rusila mosque in Marang, Terengganu.

In the Dewan Rakyat, Hadi is typically seated next to Bersatu chief and Pagoh MP Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. The tabling of Budget 2024 was conducted by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and featured an allocation of RM393.8 billion, marking the largest budget in Malaysia’s history. This development occurred on October 16, 2023.
