79% Pregnant Women Died From Covid-19 Were Unvaccinated: Health DG

As many as 79% of the 191 deaths due to complications of Covid-19 infection among pregnant women last year, consisted of those who did not receive the vaccine injection. Health DG Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said all the deaths among pregnant women reported since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country, also involved 83% of those with comorbidities. However, for this year until February 15, no pregnant woman died due to Covid.

“The high vaccine coverage of 94.7 per cent at the age of 18 and above was achieved in October 2021 and this contributed to the decrease in maternal mortality due to COVID-19 complications,” said Health DG Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in his social media post.

He said a total of 18,277 cases of COVID-19 infection among pregnant women were reported from March 2020 to January this year.

In an another social media post, Health DG said that more than 50,000 children aged below 12 in the country have been infected by Covid-19 since January 2022.

According to him of the 50,826 cases involving children, 50,674 (99.7%) were Category 1 and 2 infections while there were 120 cases in Category 3, 28 in Category 4 and four in Category 5.

The daily Covid-19 bed usage pattern among children under 12 years has shown to be increasing, in line with the rise in Covid-19 cases in the country.
