Several university students from Sabah and Sarawak studying in the peninsula are opting to spend their Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday away from home. According to several students, they are facing difficulting in traveling back to home because of the high cost of flight tickets. A Bachelor’s degree student studying at Universiti Teknologi Mara Shah Alam said that RM5,000 for a one-way ticket to Tawau, Sabah is exorbitant and not worth it. “That amounts to five months’ worth of expenses on campus,” she added. While another student from Universiti Utara said he opted not to ‘balik kampung’ with his family in Lahad Datu as the ticket was priced at over RM1,500.
