Guan Eng Loses Defamation Suit Against MCA Veep and The Star

Lim Guan Eng today lost the defamation suit against MCA vice-president Teik Cheng and Star Media Group, publishers of The Star newspaper. The High Court dismissed the suit stating that an opinion piece Tan wrote in The Star about Lim and funding for a Chinese school last year was fair comment and not defamatory. Guan Eng has been ordered to pay RM20,000 to Tan and RM 30,000 to Star Media Group. The judge Quay said normal folk would not pass judgement on Lim, however, would expect him to respond, given that the piece published in the “Letters to the editor” section of the paper ended with Tan calling for a response.
