Saifuddin Nasution Warns Sanusi: Court Action Imminent After REE Investigations

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail issued a warning to caretaker Kedah Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, asserting that court action would ensue once investigations into the rare earth elements (REE) theft in Sik are completed. The Home Minister had previously linked Sanusi to illegal REE mining activities in the Bukit Enggang Forest Reserve, Sik.

During a press conference following a dinner event, Saifuddin Nasution, who is also the PKR secretary-general, clarified that the Forestry Department had already concluded its investigations and taken appropriate action. Notably, there was a conviction for trespassing into a forest reserve. However, the Kedah Land and Mines Office, allegedly due to the director’s close relationship with Sanusi, did not investigate the matter.

Sanusi, also the Perikatan Nasional election director, challenged Saifuddin Nasution to take legal action against him instead of attempting to create negative perceptions during the run-up to the August 12 six-state elections. In response, Saifuddin Nasution assured that authorities would conduct thorough investigations to gather evidence for the case.

He emphasized that both the Forestry Department and the Immigration Department had conducted investigations regarding the REE theft and the involvement of foreigners. Several arrests were made, leading to charges and convictions. Saifuddin Nasution dismissed Sanusi’s claim that it was merely a perception issue, emphasizing that the evidence supporting the REE case was crystal clear.

Saifuddin Nasution asserted that his claims were backed by evidence and documented records, while he accused Sanusi of panicking in response to the revelations. He questioned why the Kedah Land and Mines Office had not pursued an investigation within its jurisdiction concerning the theft.

The Home Minister concluded by urging Sanusi to address the issue and respond to the concerns raised. He asserted that the ongoing investigations would eventually lead to legal action, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter at hand.
