Why Sarawak Polls Now? CM Johari Explains

Sarawak Chief Minister Patinggi Abang Johari Openg said that assembly polls are going to conduct in December after Agong’s consent to end the emergency. He said that tenure was already ended in June and it would be unfair with people’s mandate if the government remains in power during the emergency. The Sarawak mandate was expired on June 7.

The chief minister said, “Sarawak like Melaka, has unavoidable circumstances which require a state election to be held. It is the people’s right to vote.” It is believed that the Sarawak election would be held by the mid of December as an election must be held within 60 days of the lifting of the state of emergency.

Johari Openg further said that the GPS government is feeling obligated to give the people its right to choose the government. “When members of my government and I were appointed, we made the solemn oath to preserve, protect and defend the State Constitution and the Federal Constitution.

He said that the government cannot make major decisions without having a mandate. “We just govern the state, that is all,” he added. Johari said that the election will take place with complete precaution and all the necessary Standard Operating Procedures.
