China Sees Sudden Surge In Covid Cases After 2 Years, Millions Under Lockdown

China on Tuesday reported a total of 5,280 new Covid-19 cases, the highest in two years, forcing government to impose new restrictions in several cities. According to the National Health Commission (NHC), the new Covid infections in the country are driven by Omicron variant. Jilin, the northwestern province of the country has reported over 3000 domestic transmissions. Over 50 million people and several big cities have gone under new lockdown.

China is in the middle of its worst Covid outbreak since the virus was discovered over 2 years ago. Several of China’s largest factory cities have ordered a lockdown, halting the production of Toyota cars and Apple phones.

Over the past two years, China had at most 50-100 new daily Covid cases. Now it’s 5000, and it is shutting down key supply chain arteries that feed the US economy.

New lockdown in China
Chinese authorities have ordered the lockdown in order to curb the Covid virus. At least 51 people were asked to stay inside under the fresh lockdown imposed by local authorities. Several big cities, including Beijing, Shenzhen and Shanghai are under lockdown. Transport networks also asked to limit in the several regions in the country.

China may impose its strict zero-tolerance strategy against the Covid-19 pandemic again to curb the spread of coronavirus. Under the new zero-tolerance strategy, a huge population will be asked to stay inside along with strict and mandatory quarantine.
