Catastrophic Consequences If China Takes Control: Taiwan Warns

Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen has warned of catastrophic consequences if the island fell to Chinese control. This comes amid air intrusions by China, as nearly 150 warplanes have breached Taiwan’s air defence zone. The island lives under the constant threat of invasion by China, which claims to have a province to be re-taken.

Tsai Ing-wen pledged to “do whatever it takes” to guard against an increasingly assertive Beijing. On Tuesday, Taiwan’s premier, Su Tseng-chang, described China’s incursions as “over the top” activity that is violating regional peace. He further said the island needs to be on high alert.

In an essay penned for Foreign Affairs magazine, Tsai stated that Taiwan is hoping for peaceful coexistence with China, but if its democracy and way of life are threatened, Taiwan will do whatever it takes to defend itself.

Earlier on Monday, Taiwan’s government asked Beijing to stop “irresponsible provocative actions.” This comes after some 56 Chinese jets, including nuclear-capable bombers, breached Taiwan’s air defence identification zone.

In the article, Tsai even urged other nations to “understand the value of working with Taiwan” against the threats. “They should remember that if Taiwan were to fall, the consequences would be catastrophic for regional peace and the democtratic alliance system,” she warned.
