Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob today announced that the Barisan Nasional candidates contesting in the upcoming 15th general election will undergo vetting including by religious department. He said that this is to ensure that none of the BN candidates are involved in Syariah cases.

Ismail said, “We will do the vetting with the police, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the Insolvency Department, and maybe this time around with the religious department.”
He revealed that the this is the first time that vetting by the religious authorities will be carried out for elections in Malaysia. “Maybe we have to check with the Kadi’s Office too to know if any of the candidates got married in Siam (Thailand), or did not pay child support or has a pending judgement at a syariah court,” he added.
