DAP Launches Outreach to Encourage Overseas Voters’ Participation in Johor By-elections

In preparation for the Pulai parliamentary and Simpang Jeram state by-elections on September 9, DAP is intensifying efforts to persuade overseas voters to return and exercise their voting rights. Anthony Loke, the party’s secretary-general, expressed concerns about potential low voter turnout due to many constituents working outside the areas or abroad. He emphasized the importance of high voter turnout for ensuring the legitimacy of elected representatives. Loke also stated that after a week of campaigning, the prospects for PH to win both seats appear promising, requesting full DAP support for PH candidates.

Loke stressed the significance of achieving high voter turnout to ensure the legitimacy of elected representatives in effectively representing the people’s voice. He stated, “We want a high voter turnout because it provides legitimacy to the elected representative. If the representative is chosen by less than 50 percent of voters, then the voice they carry is not strong enough.” DAP traditionally aims for a voter turnout of over 70 percent in any election.

Furthermore, Loke reported that after a week of campaigning, the chances of PH winning both seats appear promising. He highlighted the importance of the upcoming by-elections, triggered by the passing of incumbent Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub on July 23. The by-elections feature a three-cornered contest involving Perikatan Nasional, BN-PH, and independent candidates.
