Minister Fahmi Denies Claims of Increasing Parliamentary Seats to 300

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has firmly refuted claims that the unity government is planning to increase the number of parliamentary seats from 222 to 300, dismissing such allegations as unfounded. His response came after Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s recent statements during a coalition ceramah, where he suggested that if the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (PH-BN) government wins the Pulai by-election on September 9, they might consider amending the Federal Constitution to expand the number of parliamentary seats.

Fahmi, a member of the cabinet, expressed his surprise at Muhyiddin’s claim and regarded it as mere wishful thinking on the chairman’s part. He highlighted that the matter should be addressed within the upcoming Dewan Rakyat sitting and encouraged Muhyiddin to seek clarification from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the session.

Fahmi emphasized the importance of active participation in parliamentary proceedings, urging Muhyiddin not to skip parliamentary sessions and to utilize Prime Minister Question Time for inquiries. Muhyiddin had made his statement regarding increasing parliamentary seats in the context of the Pulai by-election, stressing the significance of winning it due to concerns over potential redelineation of electoral boundaries.
