Wearing School Uniform Is Not Mandatory, Says Minister

Education Minister Radzi Jidin reminded that it is not compulsory for students to wear school uniforms. They can opt to wear their own clothes to school. However, he emphasised that the attire worn to classes must be appropriate and neat. This comes after several parents complained that teachers are insisting that students attend classes in uniform.

He pointed out that the ministry had previously announced that schoolchildren will not be required to wear their uniform to school, as the government’s main goal is to bring them back to school.

“We received complaints from parents who said that certain schools had asked their children to come in school uniforms even though some of the uniforms or shoes didn’t fit anymore,” he added.

He stressed that schools must focus on welcoming students back as they reopen. He asked the authorities to pay special attention to ventilation system. “Classrooms appear to be comfortable but not the teachers room. Windows should be left open for the safety of the teachers,” he said.
