The White House is downplaying any notion that President Joe Biden is escalating his rhetoric towards China.

The White House is countering suggestions that President Joe Biden is adopting a more assertive tone toward China, following his recent reference to the nation as a “ticking time bomb.” White House officials have stated that Biden’s remarks align with ongoing U.S. criticisms of Beijing. John Kirby, spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council, emphasized that Biden’s comments are focused on China’s internal challenges, spanning economic, social, and cultural aspects.

Kirby clarified that the intention was not to intensify rhetoric. He highlighted the consistent approach of the U.S. in pushing back against China both verbally and tangibly, when it aligns with national interests and those of allies and partners. The U.S. has been forthright in addressing China’s behavior, intimidation, and coercion not only among neighboring nations but also globally.

During a recent political fundraiser, President Biden criticized Chinese Communist Party leaders, labeling them as “bad folks” and critiquing China’s stalled economy. However, there were inaccuracies in his statements regarding China’s growth rate and demographic trends.

Despite the recent comments, the U.S. administration remains committed to maintaining a responsible and collaborative relationship with China, as discussed during Biden’s meeting with President Xi Jinping in Bali. The dynamics between the two nations have seen challenges and fluctuations, including incidents like an alleged spy balloon and military encounters in the South China Sea.

China’s response to Biden’s remarks remains uncertain. Past instances, such as Biden referring to Xi as a “dictator” in June, have elicited strong reactions from China, yet subsequent visits by U.S. officials have indicated ongoing diplomatic engagement. As U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo prepares for an upcoming trip to China, the future trajectory of U.S.-China relations remains a topic of interest.
