Children Must Get Vaccinated To Prevent Complication Like MIS-C: Health DG

Health DG Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said children aged 18 and below must get vaccinated and be self-disciplined as they are at high risk of being infected with Covid-19. He said that from June 2020 to December 2021, 14 children aged 18 and below suffered from multi-system inflammatory syndrome while being Covid positive. Dr Noor said that infected children have a high risk of suffering from MIS-C.

What is MIS-C?

MIS-C stands for multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children. In this condition internal organs, especially the heart, lungs, and brain start inflammation. From June 2020 to December 2021, a total of 174 children who are already infected with Covid-19 have suffered from MIS-C. These include children aged one to five (38), 5 to 9 (64), 9 to 12 (36), 12 and above (11).


Death among children due to MIS-C

In a statement, Health DG said, “To date, seven cases of deaths involving children have been caused by MIS-C following Covid-19 infection. Children are also at risk of getting long Covid.”


Who are the children at high risk

According to Dr Noor, children with chronic lung disease, heart disease, weakened immune system, diabetes, those undergoing treatment using steroids such as autoimmune and transplant patients are at high risk of infection. Children suffering from cancer, asthma and obesity also have high chances for serious Covid infections.


How to prevent suffering from MIS-C?

Dr Noor Hisham said the main measures to reduce the risk is self-discipline and vaccination. He said Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has been approved for children 5 to 11 and can reduce the risk of severe infections. “The vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 is timely to protect this group, especially children with comorbidities,” he added.
